This video will give you insights on driving a 1996 Camry worth about $1500. You will also find helpful tips on the pop-ups throughout the video about important repairs and maintenance for a 3rd generation Camry.
I drive a 2001 Camry with the same engine. 196k now and drive it to work every day from Westchester to Manhattan. Bought it new and check the oil every week. Consumes a quart over a 5K oil change. Reliable, reliable and reliable.
If you’re getting anything from the 90s make sure it’s a 96 or newer so you have OBD2 to figure out what’s going wrong

toyota engine 2AZFE oil consumption
If this is 2AZFE engine, then it’s the biggest oil hog out there due to faulty piston rings which made a lot of noise around 2010 that forced Toyota to initiate engine repairs for free and extend warranty until 2015. Not the most reliable as you can see.
I believe the service bulletin was for 2006-2009
toyotaproblems.com Oil Consumption TSB
On August 11, 2011, Toyota issued a technical service bulletin (TSB)1 to dealerships which says:
“Some 2006 – 2011 model year vehicles equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine may exhibit engine oil consumption. The piston assembly has been changed to minimize oil consumption.” And that “P030# (cylinder # misfire detected) DTC may also be set as a result of oil consumption.”
